Wellmore Behavioral Health's 24-hour walk-in clinic for youths in mental health crisis in Waterbury, Connecticut, is at risk of closing due to a lack of state funding. The clinic, along with three others in the state, was initially supported by $21 million in federal COVID relief funds, which have now run out. The new state budget does not replace this funding, offering only $2 million total for all four centers—far short of the $9.4 million needed annually. Wellmore CEO Gary Steck warns that without additional support, the clinic will begin shutting down over the summer. He emphasizes the centers’ critical role in addressing youth mental health crises, citing rising suicide rates and the need for alternatives to emergency rooms. Advocates are urging the state to act to preserve these vital services.
